With the advent of the Information Age in the mid-20th century; people all over the world have become entrenched in the use of information technology, as around 6 billion people use the internet daily. That's 70% of the world's population! People use the internet for many different reasons, such as communicating, entertainment, shopping, work, and of course, information. The most common ways for people to gather information is through online news sources. But with so many different news sources with different backers, it has become difficult to know which sources you should use. This blogpost will act as a ranking for my top 5 news sources based on their trustworthiness, uses, and content.
#5 Instagram
Social media platforms such as Instagram are last on the list. I enjoy the occasional scroll through Instagram reals and find it to be a, effective way of keeping up with recent events. Instagram works best as a way to learn about recent events through a smaller lens, instead of having a multimedia corporation tell you what you should care about, you can get the thoughts and ideas from people all over the world, giving you a broader view of the event. Though this does come with its own issues, as not everyone on Instagram is as educated on a topic as the traditional journalists and reporters, making it very easy for misinformation to spread across the platform.
#4 USA Facts
USA Facts is an unbiased civic initiative that makes government data easy for people to access and understand. This source provides fact checked information about the USA and it's government that ranges from government spending and crime to education and the environment. USA Facts is a great news source for those who just want the facts without having to worry about the sources biases or manipulations. There is one negative to USA Facts though, as they don't report on specific events. That is why they are fourth on the list, while they are trustworthy with their information, you wouldn't use them as a way to learn about recent events, but as a way to educate yourself on the general facts.
#3 Reuters
Reuters is a global news organization that provides news coverage from all around the world. Reuters is a great a great news source to use when trying to learn about events outside of the USA. Their information is considered trustworthy and is viewed by over a billion people everyday. Even though Reuters is a terrific source for global news, it isn't the best for learning about US specific events.
